Time duration : 02 hours

Part One: Reading
Read the
text carefully then do the activities:
Carbon Dioxide ( CO2) in
the atmosphere helps stop the sun’s heat from escaping back into space. It
therefore helps maintain the temperature of the atmosphere.
The amount of CO2 is yet increasing
rapidly. Rising populations are making this happen. They are doing so by
burning more fossil fuels in order to run factories and cars, to cook and to
keep warm. To create new farmlands, people are also cutting and burning the
largest store of CO2 of all- the forests.
If the amount of CO2
rises, more of the sun’s heat will be held. Many scientists compare this to the
effect of a greenhouse. The glass of the greenhouse lets in the sun’s heat and
does not let it out again. Gases like CO2 act in the same way and
they are called greenhouse gases. A greenhouse does a very simple but task: it
allows plants to grow when outside temperatures are low. If the same thing
happens to the world, however; this greenhouse effect will not be good for
people. In 50 years time, a lot of species will have disappeared because of the
toxic gases.
Most scientists agree that the
global warming has been happening. Until recently, though; they did not agree
about the cause. For many of them, it was just a natural phenomenon.
But in last few years, most
scientists have agreed that the greenhouse effect is man-made and is increasing
and that the results may be very serious. They now speak about climate changes,
rising sea levels and coastal floods.
The politicians too have made a
start. In December 1997, in Kyoto,
Japan, 160
countries agreed to pass legislation to reduce the production of the greenhouse
gases. This will not be easy and it seems that we must either learn to use less
energy or pay for newer, cleaner technologies.
